Pic(k) of the week 16: MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE - EMIRATES TOWERS

This week, "Emirates Towers", my favorite building in Dubai, is having its 20th anniversary. The project which was formally opened on April 15 2000, consists of two almost identical towers of slightly different height; Emirates Tower Office (building 1 - 354m) and Jumeriah Emirates hotel tower (building 2 - 309m). At the time of opening, building 1 became the highest building in Dubai.

The Burj al Arab hotel (321m) opened just a few months earlier, but would loose its place as the highest building in Dubai quickly. It is probably no coincidence that Emirates Tower 2 (Hotel tower) is a few meters shorter than one of Dubai's biggest icons...

The triangular shape of both Emirates Towers is very recognizable and still pretty much dominates the modern part of Dubai; often referred to as "Sheik Zayed road" by us living in here.

In front of Emirates Towers, is a new building under construction; MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE. For most, the "future" has probably never been so important than under the current threat of the pandemic; not only from a medical but also from an economical standpoint.

All of us have a lot of questions on what the future will bring. However I'm confident that there will new opportunities whatever the outcome will be; that is a given.

Not sure when the Museum of the Future will open (personal guess about 1 year from now), but the building will certainly become another architectural icon of Dubai! One can see that the facade, which is decorated with beautiful Arabic calligraphy, is now coming close to completion.

The image below was shot just before the Dubai lockdown started and shows both buildings together; 20 years in between but bouncing of each other quite nicely.

Image details:
  • Fujifilm GFX50R with GF45-100 f4 lens
  • ISO 800, 1/250s, f13
  • SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) using Classic Chrome Film simulation
I'm presently test shooting the new GF 45-100 f4 lens on the GFX medium format system. Unfortunately I've been very limited in what I can shoot due to the present lockdown. Once we are allowed to leave the house again, I'll definitively take the lens on some more landscape and architectural shoots.
