Pic(k) of the week 44: ZOOMING IN ON EXPO 2020 DUBAI
EXPO 2020 DUBAI, opened one month ago, has been very interesting for photography so far. As expected for an event like this, it can be quite busy at times. I strongly recommend using the EXPO 2020 Dubai app in order to find your way and book those pavilions you absolutely want to see beforehand. Last but not least, make sure you have comfortable shoes. The site is very large and will evolve quite a bit of walking.
The opportunities for photography are wide spread. Obviously there is architectural work of the pavilions (exterior and interior) but also the possibility to do a bit of street photography and of course night photography, if you stay after dark. Remember it gets dark earlier now in Dubai; around 1730 (5.30pm) for the coming months.
On my last visit to the Expo site, I wanted to limit myself shooting only “abstract architectural” work; something I love to do with a long lens, especially when working in busy places like this. One is allowed to bring in a lens of maximum 30cm length (not focal length) without the need for special permission. The lens I took last week, was the new Fujifilm XF70-300, a lens which is small for its zoom range and which even works with the Teleconverters.
One of the more interesting pavilions architecturally is the one from Pakistan! It was designed by one of Pakistans leading visual artists, Rashid Rana. The artistic intervention titled “Unity of all that appears”, comprises 24.000 seemingly identical but all in fact unique pieces, fractionally different from each other in size and colour but welded together in harmony. According to the artist this is a link to the vast diversity of the country. The natural colour of the facades does change during the course of the day and I personally find it most interesting just after sunset.
