Pic(k) of the week 28: ABSTRACT AERIAL - GHENT SEAPORT

An Aerial photo that makes you question what you are looking at? My number one objective when shooting abstract work from above!

Industrial scenes are often a great candidate for this type of work. North of Ghent (Belgium), one finds Ghent Seaport. The largest industrial site in the harbor area, is ArcelorMittal Ghent, formerly known as Sidmar and part of a large multinational steel cooperation with the same name. Most of the steel produced is for car manufacturing in the area.

Needless to say that a large factory such as ArcelorMittal, needs lots of Raw materials, which seem to mostly arrive by ship. This part of the site is what inspired me to shoot the image below. The horizontal lines across are part of the rail transport system of the materials.

Image details:

  • Fujifilm X-E4 with XF60 f2.4 lens
  • ISO 160, f4.5, 1/1400s
  • RAW file development in Lightroom Classic
  • DxO ColorEfex pro 4 for optimal contrast

As the entire Ghent Seaport area is a restricted flying zone from the ground up to 1000ft (300m), using drones for aerial photography, while not impossible, needs specific pre-approval and not always easy to get.

Flying an aircraft like our 1954 Piper Super Cub just above 1000ft over the site, is completely legal and much more straight forward. For Aerial photography, I've always been a big proponent of using the best photo platform for the job; sometimes this is a drone, other times a fixed wing  airplane or even a helicopter.

If you haven't done so in a while, check out my AERIAL portfolio here.
