Pic(k) of the week 35: IFE AERIALS - DUBAI to BRUSSELS

Two years ago, I started a new personal project, titled "IFE AERIALS"; IFE standing for the on board In-Flight Entertainment system in the passenger cabin. I personally think that the best in-flight entertainment in an aircraft, is still observing the world go past through your window. If you are not stuck in a middle seat that is...

Well, modern airliners often show the world below through several on board cameras which can be selected through the IFE system, my favorite is the one that looks vertically down below the aircraft.

Since mid 2018, I'm regularly shooting this screen and feel a bit like doing aerial photography from a balloon (see this years Pic(k) of the week 32), where there is no control of what is coming up. I also like the roughness of the image, where the pixels of the LCD screen can often be seen.

In the image below, I'm showing 12 images shot on a flight from Dubai to Brussels. The first 8 being around the Dubai area, while the last 4 were shot on the approach into the capital of Belgium.

Image details:

  • Fujifilm X-T4 with XF27 pancake lens
  • Mostly around 1/400s and f4, with varying ISO around 3200-6400
  • All Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) using classic negative film simulation
  • Contact sheet made in Lightroom Classic
I've recently picked up the great book Magnum Contact sheets again, which was the inspiration to present the images similar to a film contact sheet. My entire project so far can be found here
