Pic(k) of the week 33: PIPER SUPER CUB DUO - 40 year difference

One of the highlights of going to my home country Belgian is of course the grassroots flying I’m able to do in our Piper Super Cub! I joined up on the wing of a fellow Piper Super Cub owner for some formation flying; always fun but not to be done without proper training and briefing. Together we ended up at the great airport of Namur (Temploux) in the south of Belgium for a brief meet-up respecting local Covid-19 rules. Both airline pilots for a living, working for different companies, it was the perfect time to update each other on the latest news over a cup of coffee. As the airline business has been hit hard during the pandemic there was plenty to talk about!

An interesting fact is that our aircraft have virtually 40 years between them; ours (on the right) being a 1954 model that used to serve in the Dutch Air Force, my friends (on the left) is one of the last Super Cubs ever built in 1994. Minor differences are visible on the engine intake, rear windows and flight controls between the two aircraft, but flying wise the aircraft are near identical. Why change a winning team comes to mind! It is not without reason that this make and model is still extensively used in Alaska for some real bush flying.

As we were parked close together at Namur, it was a good opportunity to frame an image of both aircraft and its pilots!
